The biggest two rules for washing your activewear:
Skip the Heat
Synthetic materials such as nylon, spandex, and others used for Joylyanwear should be washed in cold water. You should always skip the dryer, even on the low heat setting. Allow the work-out clothes to air-dry away from direct heat and sunlight.
Go It Alone
Work-out clothes or swimwear made from synthetic fibers don’t like to associate with other laundry items. Towels, jeans, and cotton T-shirts are a particular no-no. The cotton fibers will produce lint that is attracted to the synthetic fibers and that lint will form little balls or pills all over the surface. It’s best, even when washing with similar fabrics, to turn the pants inside out to reduce friction on the outer finish. Use a laundry bag is a good idea: a mesh bag is also handy for protecting delicate items from rubbing up against other things in the wash, since the mesh offers a layer of protection while still letting soap and water through
Hand washing is highly recommended. In case you must using washing machine, remember turn it inside out. This will cut down on rubbing in the wash and slow down fading. Not to mention, it’s the inside of your gear that’s rubbing up on the sweat and oil from your skin anyway, so it’ll still get super-clean even when it’s inside-out! But, choose the gentle cycle and a lower final spin setting. No need to expose the fabric to excessive abrasion or stretching from high-speed wringing.
Be Stingy With Detergent
Less is more when it comes to detergent and synthetic materials. Too many suds will leave your work-out clothes feeling stiff, sticky, and trap bacteria and odor. That leftover detergent can also cause skin irritation in some very sensitive places.
Avoid Fabric Softeners
While they might be a nice addition for other clothes, fabric softeners can coat your yoga clothes with a film that traps in odors and inhibits them from wicking away moisture.
No, the heat will severely damage it. The materials of workout clothes do not like high temperatures and steam. During ironing, they may lose their valuable ventilation or thermoactivated properties. If you need to get a few wrinkles out, you can use steam iron on a low setting for a few minutes. Or better yet, just wear them wrinkled—you’ll be sweating soon enough anyway!
